Damond Motorsports Mazdaspeed Short Shift Plate Install guide

The Damond Morotsports Short Shifter Plate(SSP), is a great way to shorten the shifter throw on your Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6.

The Damond Motorsports SSP works by moving the ball on which the shifter cable is mounted closer to the input selector fork, thus reducing the throw of the shifts. The shifter itself retains the factory height. The SSP attaches to the transmission shifter assembly in a slide over and under fashion, and is locked into place with the included hardware. The hardware supplied allows the SSP to be installed with or without the factory shift weight.

Tools needed:

Needle nose pliers

Socket wrench:

8mm socket

10mm socket

12mm socket

Long extension

Wrenches:

13mm or similar

If your car is equipped with the factory air box, begin by removing the air box. Unclip the top portion of the box, via the 4 metal clips(green circles). Loosen the 10mm hose clamp holding the top of the box to the intake tube(red circle). Pull the top of the air box out of the intake tube, and set it aside(caution the MAF sensor will still be plugged in, if you wish to remove the air box completely, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery 10mm, and unplug the MAF sensor).

Remove the air filter, and set it aside. Remove the lower portion of the air box by pulling straight up. It is held in place by rubber grommets.

If you have a short ram intake, begin by removing the filter, generally 10mm or 8mm hose clamp(red circle). Refer to the manufactures instructions.

If you have a cold air intake equipped, you may not need to remove it, since there is space around the piping to install the SSP. However, if you wish to remove it for more working space, refer to the manufactures instructions.

Locate the shifter assembly selector fork and shift cables on top of the transmission(circled in green).

Remove the factory shift weight, held in by two 12mm bolts(circled in green). It helps to have a long extension to get better access to the bolts. Hold the weight in one hand, to prevent the shifter assembly from moving.

Remove the factory shift cable from the ball stud on the shifter fork. Using a 13mm wrench, or similar, or needle nose pliers, slide it under the cable and around the ball stud, and press down. This will apply pressure to the force to pop the cable off of the ball stud.

Install the DM SSP onto the selector fork. First place the elongated groove on the SSP on the ball stud of the selector fork. Slide the SSP so that it is locked in place on the selector fork ball stud. Turn the SSP to align the shift weight bolt holes of the selector fork over the SSP bolt holes(down, slide, turn indicated by blue arrows).

With the supplied hardware, you may either reuse the factor weight, or use no weight. To reuse the factory weight, install the two supplied 12mm bolts into the weight(blue loctite recommended on the threads). To delete the factory weight, install the two supplied 12mm bolts into the bolt holes, and use the two supplied 13mm lock nuts, to lock the SSP in place.

Reinstall the shifter cable onto the SSP ball stud by pressing down the end of the cable until it pops onto the ball stud.

Reinstall the intake/filter assembly.

Perform a quick test inside the vehicle to insure the shifter shifts properly.

Congratulations! You have installed the Damond Motorsports Short Shift Plate. Go for a drive, and experience the shorter and precise shifting the DM SSP has to offer.
