Before we dive into exploring aftermarket brands, it's essential to grasp the fundamental role of the exhaust systemThe primary function of the exhaust system is to safely remove the exhaust gases produced during the combustion process in the engine. These gases, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide, are harmful to both the environment and human health if released directly into the atmosphere. The OEM exhaust systems are typically designed to comply with environmental regulations and to control emissions. One of the major components that is installed in an exhaust system is a catalytic converter.
A catalytic converter is an essential component of a vehicle's exhaust system, tasked with reducing harmful emissions before they are released into the environment. It is ran through a series of chemical reactions that take place within its structure. Inside the catalytic converter, there are typically two main types of catalysts: reduction catalysts and oxidation catalysts. These catalysts are often made from precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which serve as active sites for chemical reactions.

Top Benefits of Upgrading Your Mazdaspeed 3/6 Exhaust System

1. Flow Restriction

The stock exhaust pipe often time fails to provide sufficient airflow due to the compact density of the catalytic converter, leading to poor exhaust gas flow. An upgraded exhaust system improves the flow of exhaust gases out of the engine, reducing backpressure.

2. Improvement in Performance

Upgrading to a high-performance aftermarket exhaust system can reduce exhaust restriction, optimize exhaust flow, and unlock additional horsepower and torque. This results in improved acceleration, better throttle response, better fuel economy, and an overall more engaging driving experience.

3. Increase Sounds

Enthusiasts often seek a more aggressive exhaust note to complement the Mazdaspeed's spirited performance. Factory exhaust systems prioritize noise reduction, resulting in a relatively subdued sound. Upgrading to an aftermarket exhaust system can unleash a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note, enhancing the experience of driving the Mazdaspeed.

4. Weight Reduction

Many aftermarket exhaust systems are constructed from lightweight materials such as stainless steel or titanium. By replacing the factory exhaust system with a lighter aftermarket alternative, enthusiasts can reduce the vehicle's overall weight, which can have a positive impact on suspension dynamics and ride quality.

5. Longevity & Durability

Rust accumulation is a common issue, especially living in regions with harsh weather conditions. The use of upgraded stainless steel exhaust systems, and thorough cleaning, especially during winter months, can help prevent rust and extend the lifespan of the exhaust system.

6. Supporting Future Modifications

An upgraded exhaust system is a fundamental modification that supports other performance upgrades. For instance, if you plan to install a larger turbo, intercooler, or intake system, a high-flow exhaust will help maximize the benefits of these modifications.

- Catless: Offer the least exhaust restriction, resulting in greater exhaust flow and potentially higher horsepower and torque gains.

ODER

- Catted: Minimize strong exhaust odors by effectively converting harmful emissions.

- Catless: May result in stronger exhaust odors, particularly during cold starts or idling.

EMISSIONS

- Catted: Ensure compliance with emissions regulations, crucial for passing emissions testing.

- Catless: May not be legal for on-road use in regions with strict emissions regulations.

PRICE

- Catted: Generally have a higher price tag due to the presence of a catalytic converter.

- Catless: Typically more affordable as they lack a catalytic converter.

Common Questions About Upgrading Exhaust Systems

Do I need a tune when upgrading the exhaust system or downpipe ?

When upgrading your Cat-back Exhaust System, it is not required to have a tune on your Mazdaspeed. This type of exhaust modification affects the sound and flow of exhaust gases "After" the catalytic converter, providing modest performance improvements without altering the engine’s air-fuel mixture significantly.
However, when upgrading your downpipe, the first thing a Mazdaspeed owner needs to prioritize before installing any downpipe is upgrading their HPFP ( High Pressure Fuel Pump ) & having a proper Tune. This is an extremely important step & required to maximize the efficiency of your vehicle and minimize the chances of having your vehicle running too lean or rich. Let's discuss why it's important to upgrade your HPFP & have a tune.
Autotech HPFP Mazdaspeed 3

High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)

Mazdaspeed engines when fitted with an aftermarket downpipe, will experience improved exhaust flow and reduced backpressure. This allows the turbo to spool faster and generate more boost, increasing the air entering the engine. Now to maintain the proper air-fuel ratio and ensure the engine operates efficiently, "More fuel is required". The stock HPFP may not be able to supply the necessary fuel at higher boost levels, leading to potential fuel starvation and engine knock. Upgrading the downpipe can push the stock HPFP beyond its limits, especially at higher RPMs and under heavy load. An upgraded HPFP ensures consistent fuel delivery, preventing fuel cuts that can cause hesitation, reduced performance, and possible engine damage.

Tune

When upgrading a downpipe on a Mazdaspeed 3, it is essential to get a tune because the increased exhaust flow can significantly affect the engine's air-fuel ratio and boost levels. The stock engine control unit (ECU) isn't optimized for these changes, leading to potential issues like running too lean, which can cause engine knock and damage. A tune recalibrates the ECU to manage the increased airflow, ensuring efficient combustion and maximizing performance gains in horsepower and torque. It also enhances throttle response and overall drivability, while preventing check engine lights by properly adjusting O2 sensor readings and emissions controls. Without a tune, the benefits of the downpipe upgrade won't be fully realized, and there's a higher risk of engine problems.
We will have another blog that discusses about the entire tuning process in a more broad way in the upcoming blogs. But for now, we appreciate you for stopping by and getting to know how the exhaust systems functions and why you need to upgrade yours.
